Wirral Youth Voice Conference 2014

Wirral Youth Voice Conference 2014

Dr Victoria Eames (consultant clinical psychologist), Rebecca Moon (assistant psychologist) from Adcote House Education/Health Assessment Unit and Rachel Pulham (assistant psychologist) attended the ‘Wirral Youth Voice Conference’ at Wallasey Town Hall on Thursday 16th October 2014, with the theme of the event being identified as ‘Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health’.

Over 100 Secondary Pupils from various local schools attended the event. The day involved a selection of workshops focusing on topics such as relationships, homophobia, Autism and A.D.H.D. The day also included performance pieces by the Creative Youth Development Team and Inclusion Dance, exploring key issues for young people today.

Vicky Eames was part of the steering group and delivered training to Peer Educators to enable them to deliver a 1 hour resilience workshop, utilising resources from the ‘Team of Life’. Vicky and Rebecca also had a  ‘Team of Life’ and ‘Next Step’ stall to provide an opportunity for professionals and young people to view these CAMHS resources, ask questions and take away ‘Mymind’ posters, flyers and Team of Life’ ‘Goal makers’, from the Team of Life’ Kit.

Vicky also took part in the conference ‘Hot Seat Panel’ which included professionals from children’s agencies and council departments. The young people at the conference posed questions to the panel regarding issues such as online bullying, body image and funding cuts for children’s services.

Reflecting on the day, Vicky commented, “It was amazing to be part of an event which involved young people and gave them an opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas for improving young people’s emotional wellbeing and mental health”.

Vicky plans to create a document summarising the delegates’ ideas about tackling some of the problems young people face in their lives, based on the ideas they shared in the Team of Life’ Resilience workshop session. It is hoped this document will be shared with other young people across Wirral.

By Rebecca Moon (assistant psychologist, CWP Wirral CAMHS).
