Next Step – unpacking goal setting

A step in right direction staircase

We were recently privileged to attend one of the initial training sessions for the new “Next Step” resource.  This new product has been developed within our CAMHS services in consultation with some of the young people who use our service.

The training reminded us of past sessions working with families, where it felt like we needed some visual tools to help create movement and we’re happy to say that the Next Steps pack and the training gives us that.  It is a really useful tool for visually showing the steps and targets for mutually agreed outcomes.

Learning and practicing in the training really gave us lots of ideas, motivation and helped us understand Goal Based Outcomes and its next step.

The flexibility of using the session records, progress charts and the progress logs is already proving extremely helpful.  The resource pack is aimed at enhancing the therapy session rather than directing it.  The resources are easy to use and are flexible to use, supporting creativity in clinical work rather than stifling it.  In addition, the really thoughtful images and the words used, allows lots of scope for interpretation by clinicians and young people/families. The pack allows young people to focus on what is important to them.  The pack itself shows how much work and effort has gone into the Next Steps.  This has been a great piece of work with participation from both staff and young people who use our services.

We would be particularly keen to use the pack with young people with learning or social communication difficulties who find verbal session difficult or anxiety provoking.

We are so pleased to have a really professional resource at our finger tips and we can’t recommend this training highly enough.
