East Cheshire CAMHS launch their Young Advisors

CWP is the first health trust in the country to adopt the Young Advisors social enterprise model to empower young people to influence local decision making and service improvement.

12 young people who access child and adolescent mental health services have now completed nationally accredited training to form an established group of Young Advisors for Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (CWP).

Aged between 15 and 21, Young Advisors are trained agents of social action who guide local authorities, housing associations and other local partners about what it is like for a young person to live, work, learn and play in their neighbourhood. Through the national Young Advisors organisation the young people have developed skills including service appraisal, youth proofing, community mapping, leadership, working with difficult people and peer mentoring.

Carole Winstanley, clinical service manager for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, says: “We are committed to working in partnership with children and young people who access our services and want to empower them to express their views and be actively involved in decisions that affect their lives. The group has already been approached by local organisations about commissioned work.

“We chose to launch during Children’s Rights Month to help raise awareness and understanding of children’s rights and will be championing the rights of children and young people throughout the month.

Bella Cope, newly accredited Young Advisor, says: “The best bit about being a Young Advisor is knowing that we can now do bigger and better things and take our projects even further. From a personal point of view, I think it will help us as individuals now, but also in our future lives.”

CWP will be working with the Children’s Society and Cheshire East Council to form the South and East Cheshire Partnership.
