Driving Lessons On Medication? – A Brief Guide

Sunny Road and Road sign

We were recently asked by one of our service users who was about to start driving lessons, whether it’s safe to do so when taking medication prescribed by a doctor for mental health problems.  This prompted us to dig a little deeper and we thought it may be useful to share our findings.

First and foremost, you wouldn’t necessarily have to inform the DVLA as the DVLA actually looks at conditions rather than medication. Therefore, the responsibility is with the person driving, to judge whether or not the medication makes them feel drowsy and whether it feels safe to drive.

One thing we DID learn during this information gathering was that you should also inform your insurance company, just in case you are involved in an accident, as this will keep your policy valid.

Further information on specific medications can be found at the Choice and Medication website (<–click the link)
